Oregano Socks

The Oregano Socks are knitted from the cuff downwards, featuring an elliptical cable set within ribbing. A slip-stitch heel flap is edged in garter stitch, and is completed with a short-row heel turn and gusset. The pattern offers directions for two yarn weights: Option A is for a heavier, sport-weight yarn; Option B uses a standard 4-ply/fingering-weight yarn.

Yarn

Option A (Heavier sock): approx 260, 310, 400 m/285, 340, 440yd sport-weight wool light DK/sport-weight sock yarn

Featured Yarn: Black Isle Yarns Killen Sock Clipping Year 2019 (80% Scottish Bluefaced Leicester, 20% Mohair wool; 270m/295yd per 100g hank)
1, 2, 2 hanks in shade Spring Green

Option B (Lighter sock): 310, 360, 480 m/339, 394, 525 yd 4-ply/fingering-weight sock yarn

Featured Yarn: Schachenmayr Regia 4-Ply Tweed (70% wool, 25% polyamide, 5% viscose; 200m/219yd per 50g ball).
2, 2, 3 balls in shade Natur Tweed 0002

Gauge

Option A (Sport-weight yarn):
1 rep of 14-st cable pattern worked in the round = 3.5cm/ 1½” wide, 2.5cm/1” long, measured unstretched

21 stitches and 29 rows = 10cm/4” in stocking stitch in the round

Tension was achieved using size 3mm/US2.5 needles

Option B (4-ply/fingering weight yarn):

1 rep of 14-st cable pattern worked in the round = 3cm/ 1¼” wide, 2cm/¾” long, measured unstretched

34 stitches and 48 rows = 10cm/4” in stocking stitch in the round

Tension was achieved using size 2.5mm/US1.5 needles

Equipment

  • Your preferred needle type for knitting small circumferences in the round

  • 2.5mm/US1.5 knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge

  • 3mm knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge

This pattern is written for 3 adult women’s sizes, and includes both written and charted cable directions
